FAQs

What's the difference between the Rope Lube and the Rope Goo?

They're a team. The Rope Lube is made of a blend of camellia and jojoba oils — it penetrates the fibres and restores the suppleness jute loses over time. The Rope Goo is a beeswax-based paste mixed with camellia oil, sealing the oil in so treatments last longer and giving the rope a smooth, conditioned finish. Oil first for nourishment, paste after for protection.

Is your rope goo safe on skin? What's in it?

Our Rope Goo combines beeswax with cosmetic-grade camellia oil. If you or your partner have sensitivities to any of these ingredients (beeswax in particular), test on a small patch of skin first, as you would with any topical product.

How long do the products keep?

Happily, these are some of the most stable natural ingredients around. Jojoba is technically a liquid wax rather than an oil, which makes it exceptionally resistant to going rancid — it keeps for years. Camellia oil is similarly long-lasting, and beeswax is effectively indefinite. Stored with the lids on, away from heat and direct sunlight, your kit will comfortably outlast several rounds of rope treatment — most people run out long before anything spoils.

Which ropes is this kit for?

Primarily jute — that's the fibre that genuinely needs oiling and conditioning. Our cotton and linen-hemp ropes are deliberately low-maintenance and don't require any of this. So if your kit is all cotton or linen-hemp, you don't need this; if you tie with jute, this is everything the upkeep asks for in one pouch.

Why are there shears in a rope care kit?

Because caring for rope includes being able to cut the rope ends. Ropes need trimming over their lifetime — cutting a longer length down to size, tidying a frayed end before re-knotting or whipping it, or removing a damaged section so the rest of the rope lives on. EMT shears make clean, controlled cuts through rope without crushing the fibres. They're also the standard safety tool in rope practice — designed to cut rope away quickly without cutting the person underneath — so it's a pair worth keeping within reach whenever someone is tied.

How do I actually use these products?

Run the rope through a cloth (the included microfibre works well) with a small amount of Lube, working along the full length so it absorbs evenly — a little goes a long way. Follow with a light pass of Goo, then run the rope through your hands or a carabiner a few times to work everything in and buff off any excess. Adjust to your climate: more oil in humid conditions to stop ropes feeling sticky, more paste in dry conditions to hold moisture in.

How often should I treat my ropes?

There's no fixed schedule — the rope tells you. When jute starts feeling dry, stiff, or brittle rather than smooth and lively, it's time. For regularly used rope that might mean every few months; occasionally used rope needs it less often. Skin contact, climate, and storage all play a part.

Is your rope lube safe on skin? What's in it?

Our Rope Lube is a blend of camellia and jojoba oils — the two classic rope conditioning oils. Both are cosmetic-grade carrier oils, the same grade used in skincare and massage products, chosen precisely because treated rope spends its life against skin. They're also naturally odourless, so your ropes won't pick up any scent from treatment.
